NEW YORK – A 22-year-old Queens man was sentenced to nearly two decades behind bars in connection with a botched shooting that left him dead in 2020, the local district attorney’s office said.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced on Friday that Nazieer Basir was sentenced to 17 years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision for the fatal murder of a 22-year-old man in Ozone Park. Basir pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter last month.
According to the allegations, shortly before 10pm on December 7, 2020, Basir and three other people, including the victim, Royhessny Sintjago, attempted to assault a group of rivals sitting in a car parked near the intersection between 90th street yes Avenue Freedom.
Eventually, according to the allegations, the car drove away and Sintjago gave chase on foot. Basir fired two shots at the car, one hitting Sintjago in the head, killing him.
“We will not tolerate shootings on the streets of Queens County. People will be held accountable for their actions. The ruling issued today by the court adequately punishes the defendant for his behavior and I am grateful to everyone involved in the prosecution of this case,” Katz said after the ruling.
