“Man Commits Arson After Being Addicted to Donating to Live Streamers: Tokyo Case”

Jakarta

Live streaming has become one of the activities that is quite popular lately. Not only showing people playing games, but also anything like just venting, singing or so on.

Usually the goal of those who do this is to increase their income from broadcasting live. The way to make money is also not too complicated, because apart from being paid by the application, it also comes from donations or donations from the audience.

However, it turns out that fans of this streaming application can feel bad if they donate too much to their idol streamers. This has been proven from a case that befell a man of origin Tokyo, Japan.

The story happened in 2021. At that time, this anonymous man was addicted to donating to his idol streamers, as reported by detikINET from Tokyo Reporter, Tuesday (9/5/2023).

The addiction led to so much debt that he decided to commit suicide. Now the way to end his life is by burning the apartment where he lives.

From the results of the trial in April 2023, the 53-year-old man tried to commit suicide by starting a fire using kerosene. It happened at 03.00 local time, in December 2021.

However, the suicide attempt was unsuccessful, and instead left damage of up to 6 million yen or around Rp. 653 million. Well most of the repair costs borne by the insurance.

When asked by the judge why he chose to end his life by burning, he answered because he had things that other people shouldn’t see. So he didn’t want these items to be seen after his death, one of which was an adult video DVD.

The defendant admitted that he had started using this application since October 2020. At least every month, he spent around 80 thousand yen or around Rp. 8.7 million to donate.

This made his savings shrink, and further worsened his economic situation in the midst of a pandemic. Not to mention the cost of cellphones for three people including his ex-wife and son, then the rent for a place to live, and parking.

“There is a rating system among viewers, and if you contribute a lot, you get a higher rating, or people call you over and over again,” the defendant said.

It is known that the man in question likes a 20-year-old singer streamer. He even mentioned that the reason for his life was to continue to support his idol singers.

In the end the court sentenced him to three years. It’s just that temporarily suspended for five years.

“A suspended sentence does not mean you are pardoned. I want you to be prepared for the fact that if you commit not only arson but any and all other crimes in the world, your probation will be lifted,” the judge said.
