Manchester City Qualified for the semifinals of the Champions League after a goalless draw against Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the quarter-finals at the Wanda Metropolitano, Thursday (14/4) early morning WIB.
A goalless draw was enough for Man City to qualify for the semifinals. The Citizens have the right to qualify for winning 1-0 at the first meeting at the Etihad Stadium.
Man City got the first chance through John Stones in the 10th minute. Stones tried to get a header from a corner but it was still over the Atletico crossbar.
The visitors had the best chance in the 30th minute. Phil Foden’s cross in the penalty box can be kicked by Ilkay Gundogan but the ball only hits the right post.
The ball that vomits causes chaos in the penalty box. Gundogan managed to head the ball gag but it was blocked by an Atletico defender so that no goals were scored until the first half was over.
Atletico got their first chance in the second half. Griezmann fired a speculative shot slightly from outside the penalty box which was thin on the right side of Ederson’s goal.
Rodrigo De Paul, who only came in midway through the second half, had two chances to score. Unfortunately these two opportunities have not resulted in an equalizing goal.
The tension of the match was getting hotter into the last 15 minutes of the match. Los Colchoneros who played aggressively were able to create several golden opportunities.
Two substitutes, Angel Correa and Matheus Cunha had chances to score. But Man City’s solid defense was able to block the opportunities that the hosts got.
Man City tried to reply in the 84th minute. Attempts to score goals by Mahrez who can be broken Atletico defense.
Towards the end of the second half there was a commotion between the players of both teams after Phil Foden was violated by Felipe. The match was stopped for a few minutes because of the pushing action between the players.
The incident made the referee issued three yellow cards. One of the yellow cards made Felipe unable to continue the game because he had received two yellow cards.
In injury time, Atletico got another golden opportunity to excel in this match. But again the opportunities that Correa got could not thrill the Man City goal.
The score was 0-0 unchanged after 12 minutes of added time. The result made Man City entitled to step into the semifinals of the Champions League.
