Man City or Liverpool? – Long-distance duel for the championship – Sports news on ice hockey, winter sports and more

The championship race hasn’t been this exciting for a long time. Only on the last day of the game will it be decided who will win the Premier League. Manchester City and Liverpool FC are in a long-distance duel.

Do the Manchester City fans who have been spoiled by success in recent years at least have something to celebrate? Or will there be celebrations again in Anfield?

Defending champions City with Pep Guardiola have a narrow lead over cup winners and Champions League finalists Liverpool with Jürgen Klopp before the last matchday. The two top teams fight in a long-distance duel for the championship. Theoretically, it is even possible that the title decision will be postponed after 90 minutes.

Star coach against cult coach

In terms of popularity at their current clubs, Guardiola and Klopp take little. But the Spaniard, acclaimed by City fans and respected as one of the best coaches in the world, tends to be an introvert. And the star coach, who previously trained FC Barcelona and FC Bayern, often seems a bit dogged and distant.

On the other hand, his German coaching colleague Klopp not only inspires his own supporters, but also other football fans with his intoxicating passion and his easy-going, funny manner Borussia Dortmund as a “cult coach” – which you will probably never say about Guardiola.

Your record in England

In terms of titles won, Guardiola’s eight trophies (not counting the English Super Cup) so far lead Jurgen Klopp and his six titles with Liverpool. Guardiola won the English championship three times with the Cityzens, the FA Cup once and the League Cup four times in a row from 2018 to 2021, which is not given too much importance.

Klopp: Championship title “possible, but not likely”

Klopp has the more prestigious record with the Reds. He won the Premier League, Champions League, Club World Cup, FA Cup and League Cup once each. While Guardiola failed again with his team in the premier class and has to wait for the coveted handle pot, Klopp could bring him to Liverpool for the second time in the final against Real Madrid on May 28th in Paris.

“I don’t think we’ll get to that situation many times in our lives after we’ve already won two competitions and have two more to go,” Klopp told Sky Sports. Liverpool have already won the League Cup and FA Cup this year.

Long-distance duel on the last matchday

Manchester City have it in their own hands. The Cityzens are a point clear of pursuers Liverpool and have a six-goal advantage on goal difference. If City win their home game against Aston Villa, coached by Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard, on Sunday, the title will go to Manchester. If Man City lose or draw, Liverpool could still snatch the championship with a win at Anfield against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It would be complicated if Man City lost if Liverpool played a draw at the same time. Should the absolutely unrealistic event occur that the Cityzens lose to Villa by at least seven goals, a draw will suffice for Liverpool. With six goals behind for City, the number of goals scored decides.

In the unlikely event that points, goal difference and goals scored are identical for both clubs, the direct encounters decide. However, since the teams played 2-2 both times during the season, that would also be identical. Then, according to the rules of the Premier League, there would be an additional 39th game of the season in which the two competitors meet directly.

The future

Guardiola’s contract with Scheich-Club City runs until the summer of 2023. The 51-year-old recently said in a Sky Sports interview that he would then extend it at the earliest. Is there a farewell? “I have to see how things go with the team and with us,” he said. “I would stay for ten more years, but we have to take the time for it.” Jürgen Klopp, on the other hand, extended his contract a few weeks ago until 2026 and will probably bring a few more titles to Anfield.
