Liverpool –
Manchester City won 2-0 at half-time when they traveled to Everton in the Premier League this season. Ilkay Guendogan and Erling Haaland made the difference with their goals.
Playing at Goodison Park, Sunday (14/5/2023), Man City had difficulty dismantling the host’s solid defense. Only in the 28th minute did Riyad Mahrez manage to get a shot from a corner kick scheme, but his direction bounced over Jordan Pickford’s goal.
Caged for most of the match, Everton almost scored a goal in the 34th minute. Through a counterattack, Dominic Calvert-Lewin escaped guard and almost only had to face Ederson, but Kyle Walker managed to throw the ball away.
One golden opportunity came to Everton through a corner shortly after. Receiving the ball near Man City’s goal, Mason Holgate was less calm in controlling the ball, so his shot went over the goal.
Man City again threatened through Rodri’s long-range kick in the 35th minute, but the ball was saved by Pickford. The visitors’ efforts just paid off two minutes later.
Mahrez’s cross from the right was received by Guendogan in the penalty box. Even though he was closely guarded and his back to goal, the German midfielder was still able to turn the ball into the left corner of the goal without being able to be driven out by Pickford.
This goal made the pressure on Man City slowly disappear. Two minutes after the first goal, Haaland added to the advantage for the visitors. He completed Guendogan’s cross from the left side with a header which Pickford failed to block perfectly.
The 2-0 score for Man City lasted until halftime.
