Rashad Maleek Trice, a 26-year-old resident of Detroit, is currently being held without bond after being charged with fleeing police. Trice is accused of attacking his 22-year-old ex-girlfriend and kidnapping her 2-year-old daughter, Wynter Cole Smith.

The incident took place on Sunday, July 2, when Trice allegedly drove away in his ex-girlfriend’s Chevrolet Impala in Ingham County. Tragically, Wynter’s body was discovered in an alley on Wednesday, July 5, nearly three days after her kidnapping in Lansing.

Trice has been charged in Macomb County with several felonies, including fleeing and eluding in the third degree, attempt to disarm an officer, receiving and concealing a motor vehicle, assault with a dangerous weapon, resisting and obstructing causing injury, and three counts of resisting and obstructing a police officer.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido expressed his sorrow over the heartbreaking turn of events, stating, “Tragically, this case has taken a heart-wrenching turn, as we must now face the devastating reality that the little girl, a precious life with endless potential, was brutally taken away.” Lucido commended the relentless efforts of law enforcement, including the St. Clair Shores and Eastpointe police departments, in capturing the defendant. He also highlighted Trice’s resistance and attempts to evade justice, emphasizing the severity of his crimes.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for July 13, and a preliminary examination will take place on July 20. In the meantime, Trice will remain in custody without bond.

Federal agents played a crucial role in tracking Trice down, although specific details about their involvement have not been disclosed.
