Man Brutally Robbed and Tied Up in Manhattan Hotel During Cryptocurrency Exchange Gone Wrong

NEW YORK – A man suffered horrific moments after a brutal robbery in which suspects beat him and tied him up inside a hotel when the victim was supposed to exchange cash for digital currency in Manhattan , New York City police said.

According to authorities, the 40-year-old victim said a friend of his arranged a meeting on Saturday, April 27 at approximately 5:00 pm with an unknown person to exchange money for cryptocurrency inside a Battery Park hotel Sonder, located at 2 Washington Street.

The suspect met the victim in the hotel lobby and took him to a room on the third floor, police said. Once at the door, the person apparently pushed the victim into the room and to the floor, where he encountered two other suspects. At that time, the accused robbers beat the victim and tied him with duct tape around his ankles, wrists and mouth. The suspects then took $20,000 in cash from the victim’s purse and fled on foot to unknown locations.

The victim refused medical attention at the scene.

The three suspects are said to be between 18 and 22 years old.
