TVA man from the audience of ‘Gert’s table’ became unwell on Wednesday evening. The man had to be escorted out of the room during the testimony of writer Nele Reymen (40) about her mastectomy.
Nele Reymen talked extensively about the treatment she underwent in ‘Gert’s table’. “Everyone asks if I’m in pain, but it’s more of an uncomfortable feeling,” he said. “My skin is numb, feeling is gradually coming back, but when they take the plasters off, I don’t feel it.” She opted for a mastectomy and reconstruction with her own tissue. The writer explained in detail exactly how that worked. A strong testimony, which clearly struck a chord with the audience. One person became unwell during her story and had to be escorted from the room. Fortunately, the man quickly felt well again, presenter Gert Verhulst said later.
Hereditary burden
They were told eight years ago that Nele and her sisters were hereditarily affected by the breast cancer gene. Her two sisters previously opted for amputation, Nele decided to wait a little longer. “I didn’t really know it at the time,” says the writer. “I didn’t have a relationship yet and no children, I felt a bit invincible. I thought: we’ll see.” But now that she has two children of her own, the situation is different, she said. “I am no longer responsible for myself alone. I have a family, a partner. So I cannot get sick.”
She herself looks positively to the future, she said. “I think it’s going to be fine. For a lot of women it’s super hard to lose those breasts, but for me it wasn’t that big of a deal. I don’t want to look back with nostalgia, but look ahead to what is to come. I had a D cup and fed two children with it. And now I get two beautiful breasts.” A decision that her partner also completely understood. “From the beginning he said: better this than getting sick.”
