NEW YORK — Cops are searching for a man who they say beat a woman to death in a Manhattan hotel room and then wore her leggings outside the hotel because his pants were too bloody from the murder.
Denisse Oleas-Arancibia was discovered on February 8 by a housekeeper at the 54 SoHo hotel on Watts Street, with plastic fragments embedded in her head, an indication of the violence she endured, according to the police chief of detectives. New York, Joseph Kenny.
Before Oleas-Arancibia’s body was found, police said a woman called asking for a welfare check, one of a series of checks being conducted by the hotel front desk. On one occasion, despite the “do not disturb” sign on the door, a hotel employee entered the room and saw Oleas-Arancibia, 38, lying covered with a blanket.
Unfortunately, the employee assumed she was asleep and did not suspect a crime had been committed.
Police were alerted to the disappearance when her son filed a missing person report in Queens, where she lived. After an investigation, hotel staff made the grim discovery in the 11th floor room around 10:30 a.m. on February 8. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary evidence indicated that the death may have been a homicide and that a fight may have taken place. Police sources said that an iron covered in blood was found near the woman and that she had wounds on her head and throughout her body.
But police said they have one thing that could help them find the suspect: his pants.
“We have a video of the woman arriving at the location wearing a different pair of tights. And later, we have a man leaving the hotel wearing the same tights. And we also have a pair of men’s pants in the hotel room,” Kenny said.
He also revealed that investigators were able to track the suspect’s movements through the victim’s credit card and MetroCard, which the suspect allegedly stole and has been using.
Oleas-Arancibia stayed periodically at the hotel, although he lived in Queens. It is believed that she may have been an escort. Her son told investigators that she worked in Manhattan for an unknown man.
An investigation is ongoing.
