Man arrested with torch at home of D66 leader Kaag

Kaag is in isolation at home because she has been in contact with someone who is infected with the corona virus. Like many other politicians, the future finance minister is regularly threatened and intimidated.

To ring

The man was filmed by allies, who shouted slogans together. The images show how the man rang the bell at the house, and even filmed through the window in the door.

According to various media, the arrested man was also arrested last month when he visited the home of caretaker minister Hugo de Jonge (Public Health) in Rotterdam.

Nuisance reports

The police confirmed the arrest and stated that there were several reports of nuisance in the area. “Afterwards we also saw that there was a live stream on social media, which also helped to map out exactly what happened.”

The man would have been recognized on the basis of the livestream images and then arrested. The police could not yet say whether the suspect had indeed shown up at Minister De Jonge before. The matter is now under further investigation.

Politicians reacted with horror to the incident. Kaags second Rob Jetten speaks of “intimidating scum”. “Stay away from the houses of politicians. How far should we let it go in the Netherlands?” D66 MP Jan Paternotte calls it “totally idiotic and extremely threatening”. “Whoever touches our ministers touches our democracy. And yes: words matter.”

‘Furthered by FvD’

Leaders of other parties also condemn the action, including Lilianne Ploumen of the PvdA, Gert-Jan Segers of the ChristenUnie, Lilian Marijnissen of the SP, Esther Ouwehand of the Party for the Animals and Caroline van der Plas of the BoerBurgerBeweging.

Segers and Ploumen also point an accusing finger at Forum for Democracy (FvD) in their tweets. “Intimidation of politicians, fueled by the conspiracy theories of Baudet and his associates, aims to undermine our freedom and democracy. We must all stand up to that,” writes the PvdA leader. Segers: “I would like to say to anyone with a weakness for FvD: wake up.”
