Man arrested twice in 4 days for New York subway robberies

A 38-year-old man, whom the NYPD identified as Rakeem Washington, was arrested twice in just 4 days, due to subway robberies.

The first of the arrests occurred last Monday, after stealing a mobile phone. At around 2:00 am, he allegedly approached a 23-year-old victim on a Manhattan subway train, demanding money and her belongings. In the end, he ended up snatching the device from her.

According to authorities, a witness warned of the robbery, which led to the arrest at the time. However, he was later released without bail.

Four days later, he robbed the New York subway again

Although his plans were thwarted, Rakeem Washington was unrepentant and involved in another robbery on Friday, at 3:00 in the morning.

In the new incident, he threatened a 56-year-old man with a box cutter and demanded money while he was aboard a 4 train, near the Bleecker Street stop, west of Manhattan.

The incident sparked a physical altercation where fortunately there were no injuries, but it served to alert the train driver and notify the Police.

Rakeem Washington was arrested once again, but the knife he possessed was not found.

Officer Michael Kemper, NYPD traffic chief, praised the authorities’ efficiency in responding to both incidents and stressed the need for the criminal justice system to establish stricter measures.
