Several Japanese media, including the broadcaster NHK, reported that a young man on a train with a knife attacked people and spilled flammable liquid and set it on fire.
A video has been released on Twitter showing people trying to get out of a burning train through the windows.
“At first I thought it was some kind of Halloween event. But I hurried away when a man with a long knife came in. I was very lucky not to be hurt,” NHK said one of the train passengers.
Violent crimes are rare in Japan, but in August, nine people were injured in a knife attack on a passenger train in Tokyo. The suspect escaped but later hung up.
In another attack in August, two people were burned by acid in the Tokyo subway.
