A man has been arrested in Morocco on suspicion of more than thirty bomb threats at schools in Brussels and Walloon Brabant, reports include VRT NWS.
More than thirty schools in Belgium were evacuated on Monday after the bomb threats and remained closed all day. No bomb was actually found in any of the schools.
The man is being interrogated by the Moroccan police, the Belgian broadcaster reports RTBF. He is said to be the sender of emails threatening explosives and demanding ransoms, according to Belgian media. The schools approached had to transfer 10 million euros, otherwise they were told “a bloody Christmas” would await them.
Nothing further has been released about the identity of the man arrested in Morocco. It is also not clear what the motive behind the bomb threats is.
About ten thousand students were affected by the school closures. The schools will open again on Tuesday, writes VRT NWS.
