It was a terrifying moment after a suspect began swinging an ax aboard a subway train on Friday, New York City Police said.
According to authorities, police received a 9-1-1 call from a person acting erratically and brandishing a gun aboard an A Line train headed to Rockaway shortly after 4:00 p.m. p.m
“It must have been a harrowing call for our 9-1-1 operator to hear and relay: a report of a man brandishing an ax on an A line train. Fortunately with our enhanced deployment, 23rd District officers were ready.” , intercepting moving train and arresting man,” Traffic Police tweeted on Saturday along with a photo of the ax that appeared to be a couple of feet long.
Police responded and canvassed the area before arresting 27-year-old Obadiah Lashley at the Beach 67 St. station. Lashley was apparently still on the train when he was detained.
It is unknown what charges, if any, or if he has an attorney. It’s also unclear how many passengers were on the train or if anyone was in immediate danger.
