SAN MATTHEW, California, USA. —
A man allegedly stabbed a woman to death in the San Francisco Bay Area and later posted a video of the murder on Facebook, authorities said.
The recording helped police locate the suspect, who was identified as 39-year-old Mark Mechikoff. He was arrested about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of where the victim was found at a San Mateo apartment complex.
“Although the motive for the victim’s stabbing remains under investigation, we know that Mechikoff ruthlessly recorded the final moments of the victim’s life and posted the video to Facebook, then fled the scene,” San Mateo police said in a statement. release.
Prosecutors identified the victim as Claribel Estrella. San Mateo County prosecutors on Friday charged Mechikoff with a single count of aggravated murder by inflicting great bodily injury and use of a knife.
His arraignment was scheduled for Friday afternoon, where an attorney will be appointed to represent him, District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe said in an email.
San Mateo police referred additional questions — such as what type of Facebook page the video was posted on and whether it has been deleted, as well as what was in the recording — to prosecutors, who did not immediately respond.
The stabbing was first reported to the Nye County Sheriff’s Department in Nevada when a caller said they had seen the video on Facebook. The police department tracked the phone number associated with the Facebook page and located it at a San Mateo apartment complex.
Officers went door to door and found Estrella almost three hours later inside an apartment, authorities said. Police said Mechikoff knew her, but have not specified how.
Mechikoff was arrested two hours later on suspicion of homicide in the city of San José.
