Man arrested for killing endangered tigers in Bangladesh | Abroad

Habib Talukder was able to stay out of the hands of the police for a long time by fleeing into the woods next to his home as soon as officers combed the area. Thanks to a tip, the police have now succeeded in arresting and detaining the man in his fifties.

Black market

The man sold the tigers’ meat, skins and bones to traders active on the international black market. He killed the Bengal tigers in the Sundarbans, a mangrove forest that stretches across Bangladesh and India

The area is home to the largest population of the Bengal tiger in the world. In 2019, there were 114 Bengal tigers living in Bangladesh, according to authorities. That is a small increase compared to 2015. In that year there were only 106, a low point. The population was four times as large in 2004.

Bangladesh reacts with relief to the arrest of the man known as Tiger Habib. It was seen by local conservationists as a major threat to forest biodiversity.
