Diego Ortega was captured as a suspect in the fatal stabbing outside a bar in The Bronx (NYC) of the Mexican Baraquiel Castelán, a man who spent more than two years in Rikers Island for a crime he did not commit.
Ortega, 26, was charged Monday with involuntary manslaughter and weapons possessionamong other charges, after being extradited to New York after his arrest on March 6 by sheriffs in Maryland, reported Daily News.
Castelán, 32, was stabbed early on Feb. 3 during an argument involving a group of men outside the “El Chicanito” bar and restaurant on E. 153rd St. near Elton Ave. in Melrose. Paramedics rushed him to Lincoln Hospital, but were unable to save him.

“The only thing we want is for the person who did it to pay,” the victim’s younger sister, Olivia Castelán, 29, said at the time. “A lot of things happen in that place. Why is it still open?” He added about the establishment where the crime occurred.
Ortega has four previous arrests, the police said. He was ordered held without bail when he was arraigned on the charges in Criminal Court in the Bronx.
Castelán, who lived nearby, was stabbed in the neck, arm and chest. He had two small daughters, ages 9 and 1, and I worked as a delivery boy in a pharmacy until he suffered a recent accident. He also worked in a family restaurant in his neighborhood.
The crime was a “dispute between two Mexican gangs,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said last month. A friend of Castelán was also stabbed at the bar, but survived the attack.
