“It was stupid, I shouldn’t have done that,” concedes the 44-year-old defendant, sentenced Monday by the Thionville criminal court. In reality, he made several “stupid mistakes”. A choice. He took his uninsured car, even though he no longer had his license and had smoked a joint. He was spotted on the A31 near the Luxembourg border because his vehicle was zigzagging on the hard shoulder. And for good reason, the driver was eating a slice of pie while driving.
He was arrested on Friday October 13 near Entrange by a CRS motorway patrol. He says he injured his ankle the day before at work, smoked a firecracker to calm the pain, called emergency services to come and take care of him. Except that the urgency is entirely relative. Never mind, he got in his car to go see a doctor. And he took advantage of the journey to have a snack.
Prison closed
“There is something working against me,” the defendant tries. Nothing to do with the superstition of a Friday the 13th a priori. “It’s your own behavior that is the problem, sir,” replied the deputy prosecutor. The man has twenty-four mentions in his record, for traffic offenses, drug issues among others. The court had withdrawn his license in a previous judgment in June. An electronic bracelet was to be installed in November to improve the sentence.
“I have changed,” promises the person concerned. He works, signed up for the code. His lawyer pleads for semi-freedom but the judges send Kamel Gaouda* back behind bars for 18 months in prison, 14 of which are closed. The suspended part will be subject to care and work obligations.
