SAN ANTONIO – A man armed with a knife barricaded himself inside a home after threatening several members of his family Saturday night in the 1300 block of W. Houston.
The suspect, identified as Joe Cantu, 40, was arrested after he attempted to set fire to the residence.
San Antonio Police Department officers responded at 11:07 p.m. following a call from a 61-year-old woman reporting a domestic disturbance.
According to the information, Cantú threatened his family member and other people inside the house. The victims managed to escape and contacted the police.
Upon arrival, officers established a perimeter around the residence as they heard the suspect breaking windows and moving furniture to block entrances.
Shortly after, the intervention of the Special Operations Unit (SOU) and the SWAT team was requested, as Cantú barricaded himself inside the location.
At approximately 2:00 a.m., the suspect was seen through a window setting the curtains in a room on fire.
At that point, officers quickly entered the home, took him into custody, and extinguished the fire before it spread. Cantú was taken to the hospital for minor injuries he suffered when he broke the windows of the house.
In addition to two prior felony warrants, he now faces additional charges for terroristic threats toward his family and arson.
The investigation continues, and arson investigators were also notified.
