NEW YORK – Authorities arrested a man after a violent incident last Thursday inside a migrant shelter in New York City, in which some police officers were assaulted.
The incident occurred on Thursday morning at the shelter located on Randall’s Island, which has been the scene of controversy since it opened with a tent. One of those incidents occurred with the stabbing death of an immigrant where three men were charged with homicide.
A video of Thursday’s incident went viral on social media and shows how objects such as cardboard boxes, a backpack and even crutches are tied to the agents. According to police, officers arrived at the shelter after responding to a 9-1-1 call about disorderly behavior by one of the asylum seekers.
For her part, a local resident pointed out what was the trigger for the fight in which the police officers were attacked. According to her, the person had run out of 30 days to stay at the shelter.
“They gave the person 30 days, they woke him up at two in the morning and he didn’t want to leave. Then, supposedly at 10 in the morning, they came back for him and, well, they called the police and the boy didn’t want to leave. Then he yelled for them to record the situation because it wasn’t fair that they took him out like that,” said Eveli Velázquez, a resident of the shelter.
The policy is that after 30 days, single men must reapply for a shelter. For families it is 60 days.
For his part, the mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, said that the officers did their job using minimal force and added that after seeing the video he ordered action to be taken for the safety of the police officers as well as the residents of the hostel.
No officers were injured.
