Japanese police announced that they had arrested, at dawn on Friday, a man holed up in a farm in the center of the country, where he had killed four people, two women and two policemen, hours earlier, in an attack he carried out with a knife and a firearm, according to “Agence France Presse.”
According to Kyodo news agency, the police arrested the attacker outside the farm near the city of Nakano in Nagano Prefecture, noting that the attack killed four people, two policemen and two women.
She explained that one of the two women died on the spot, and the other, an elderly woman, died later of her injuries.
For his part, a police spokesman told Agence France-Presse that the suspect was arrested at around 4:30 a.m. on Friday.
This is one of the very rare acts of violence in Japan, a country that has a very low murder rate and where carrying firearms is strictly controlled, according to AFP.
According to Kyodo News, the suspect hid for several hours at the farm owned by his father, who heads the Nakano Municipal Council.
It is believed that the attacker stabbed the two women with a machete before using a hunting rifle to shoot the two policemen who had arrived at the scene of the attack in response to a distress call.
The dead policemen were Yoshiki Tamai, 46, and Taku Ikuchi, 61.
