Man Arrested after Barricading Himself in Bergen Emergency Department and Threatening with Knives

A man is in custody on Monday evening after creating a tense atmosphere at the Bergen Emergency Department.

Police attorney Arne Fjellstad tells BA.

– He refused to leave the scene, and the emergency room asked the police for help.

According to the police, the man was intoxicated, and is said to have barricaded himself in a toilet room at the health centre.

He allegedly told a security guard that he was carrying a knife, and the police chose to arm themselves for the mission, operation manager Steinar Hausvik told BA.

– We didn’t quite know what or who we were going to meet.

The police established a dialogue with the man, and he is said to have come out of the toilet room relatively quickly.

– When we got control of him, we found eight knives, one and a long, large pair of scissors, says Hausvik.

– Damaged a police car

The report came in to the police at 2045.

However, this was not the first time the police had been in contact with the man in his 40s this Monday.

Earlier in the day, he is said to have caused damage to a police service car. He is also said to have created a nuisance on Unnelandsvegen by “howling and screaming” in the roadway and gardens, and was clearly under the influence of drugs, according to Hausvik.

The man is being reported for carrying a knife in a public place, and for damaging a company car, says police attorney Fjellstad.
