– It was an incident during the warm-up. Someone jumped on him and hit him, said Happio’s coach Olivier Vallaeys.
Despite the attack, Happio was able to set a new personal best – 48.57 seconds – and thus secured a place at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon in July.
– We’re shocked. A man has been arrested and Wilfried is fine. But I am speechless, it was pure aggression, it is scandalous, said Vallaeys.
Happio, who ran with a band-aid and headband over his left eye, did not want to talk about the abuse after the race.
– I do not want to talk more about it. The race was more complicated than usual because I only had one eye, he said.
