A 39-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman from Arnhem have been sentenced to three years in prison and 1.5 years in prison respectively for a number of car fires in that place.
Arnhem has been ravaged by a series of car fires since April last year. The man and woman denied in court two weeks ago to have anything to do with it. Texts mentioning fire and fires would not be about car fires, but outdoor sex, they stated.
The court calls that statement implausible, Omroep Gelderland writes. The man is convicted of setting fire to a car and a van in April, where the fire spread to the front door of a house. The same month he started two more fires.
In February 2019, the woman set fire to a sofa in a tunnel under houses, which had to be evacuated. She also set fire to a fence in April. She has been acquitted for the arson of a moped.
Social unrest
According to the judge, three fires immediately endangered people who were staying in the homes at that time. The duo also contributed to the social unrest that was caused by the fires in Arnhem.
The man also has to pay damages totaling 7,700 euros to the victims.
