A man has been charged with attempting to rape a five-month-pregnant woman outside a building in Melrose, The Bronx, in August 2021, Bronx County District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced Wednesday.
Amara Doumbouya, 27, who was arrested in Cincinnati, Ohio, was charged with attempted rape in the first degree, robbery in the second and third degree, sexual assault in the first degree, strangulation in the second degree, felonious obstruction of breathing or circulation. blood, assault in the third degree and attempted rape in the third degree.
According to the investigation, the incident occurred on August 9, 2021, around 2:30 a.m., when the victim, a 37-year-old woman who was five months pregnant at the time, was sitting alone on the front steps of a your apartment building in Morris Avenue.
At that time, the report says, the defendant allegedly approached her and made obscene comments. As the victim began to enter her building, Doumbouya allegedly grabbed her and pulled her shirt over her face, covering her nose and mouth, and wrapped the scarf around her neck until the victim was unable to breathe.
The alleged assailant then threw her to the ground and dragged her into the lobby of the building, took off her clothes, climbed on top of her and tried to kiss her. In addition, Doumbouya allegedly repeatedly punched and kicked the victim and used her body to cover his nose and mouth.
It was thanks to a good Samaritan, a neighbor, who heard the victim’s screams, that the suspect fled, says the prosecutor’s report.
The neighbor called 9-1-1 and the victim was taken to a local hospital for bruising, swelling, pain in her neck, back and abdomen, and lacerations to her mouth. The baby was born healthy months later.
The defendant was on the run for months and was arrested on February 19, 2022 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was extradited to the Bronx on March 8, 2022. He was remanded on Tuesday and is due back in court on May 17, 2022.
