As New York Police Chief Keechant Sewell told journalists at the scene, the 16-year-old was shot in the chest. Her two companions were injured in the leg and buttocks. All three were taken to hospital where the most seriously injured girl succumbed to her injuries.
There were initially no arrests. The police are using images from surveillance cameras as part of the search.
It was the second time in ten days that a minor had been killed by stray bullets in New York. A 12-year-old boy was fatally shot while sitting in a parked car in Brooklyn on Thursday last week. A 20-year-old woman who was in the car with him was injured.
Crime in New York has increased sharply since the beginning of the corona pandemic. According to the police, 296 incidents involving firearms were counted in the US east coast metropolis from January to March. In the same quarter last year, there were 260.
