On May 12, the police arrested a 33-year-old man from Groningen in Tijnje who wanted to rob a 70-year-old woman of her bank card. When officers arrested him at the intended victim’s home, he became unwell.
The woman from Tijnje had received several calls that day by someone posing as a bank employee. The man said her debit card had been used in fraudulent practices and had to be picked up urgently from her home address on Rolbrêgedeyk. The woman also had to cut the card, but leave the chip intact. The person who would collect the pass would give her a ‘unique code’ so that it would be familiar for the woman to hand over the pass.
Suspicion
However, the woman was immediately suspicious and also called the police between calls. He then sent two officers in plain clothes to her home, who waited quietly at her place for the con man. When the man came to the door, he was immediately arrested.
During the arrest, the Groninger became unwell. He had to stay overnight in hospital in Heerenveen for observation. The next morning, the man was taken to the detention complex for further investigation and questioning. The suspect’s phone and car have been confiscated by the police for further investigation.
Scam
The police warns against this form of fraud, which mainly affects the elderly, and reports that the bank never asks for debit cards or unique codes.
