Heavy “bell” on Meta’s Facebook from the European Commission, which announced the imposition of a fine on Meta Platforms in the amount of 797.72 million. euros for abusive practices for the benefit of Facebook Marketplace. In addition to the fine, Meta is required to stop enforcing these tactics.
In a statement, EU competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager pointed out that Facebook had obstructed other online ad service providers to benefit Facebook Marketplace and enjoy advantages that other online ad service providers could not have.
“The European Commission fined Meta… for breaching EU competition rules by linking its online classifieds service to the Facebook social network and by imposing unfair commercial conditions on other online classifieds service providers,” the Commission said.
Meta responded that it would appeal, but in the meantime it would comply and seek a solution that would address the Commission’s objections.
The fine comes two years after the European Commission’s initial warning about Marketplace’s connection to Facebook.
The investigation officially began in June 2021 and in December 2022 the Commission expressed reservations about the legality of the practice.
