Ex-minister Jose Thatta’s post about his first-hand experience thanks actor Mammootty for helping treat a woman who suffered a stroke and left one side paralyzed has become a social media buzz. He said that Mammootty is a great philanthropist who did not see any abnormality in a poor family after giving a surgery costing Rs.10 lakhs for free. Jose Thetayil’s response is in a note shared on Facebook.
‘The Mammootty I knew’
There are some people like this… who believe that the other hand should not know what one hand is doing! It is not about anyone else, but about Malayalam’s great actor Mammootty. After giving a surgery costing around ten lakh rupees to a poor family for free, the philanthropist is bigger than the actor in him, who doesn’t see much abnormality in it! I am writing this post because I have direct knowledge of the time and efforts taken by the great man Mammootty for a common family. I am sharing with you the experience of how Mammootty, who spent ten lakhs to save a single life and did not say a single word to the outside world, becomes a wonder in a country where there are great people who give ten rupees help and ten thousand notices for ten people…
Three months ago, Adv. I get a phone call from Anil Nagendran. It was said that I was called with high expectations. The matter is nothing else, Bindu, the wife of Sreekumar, a native of Venjaramood, who has previous experience with painting work at home, needs an urgent heart surgery. Her husband Sreekumar could not afford the huge amount required for Bindu’s surgery as she suffered a stroke and was paralyzed on one side. The family situation was also deplorable. Adv. Anil Nagendran hung up the phone. For no other reason than Bindu needed a complicated valve replacement surgery costing around Rs.10 lakhs. Although the possibility of the Karunya plan was explored, I decided to look for another way in parallel, as the delay that might occur in it would put Bindu’s life in danger.
At that thought, a face suddenly entered my mind. That guy who was my junior when I was in law college! That old teenager who left behind all the greats who walked there and suddenly became the hero of the college and won the hearts of many. It is none other than the megastar Mammootty who later became the face of Malayalam. My thought is to call Mammootty himself, who has become a support to thousands of needy people beyond his acting skills. As someone who knows many of Mammootty’s Jiva Karunya projects intimately and has been with him from the very beginning of his first ‘Kazha’ project, which benefited tens of thousands, I expressed this demand to Mammootty with the freedom of an old senior in law college. The emergency situation was also clarified. The speed of Mammootty’s intervention, who understood the seriousness of the matter, surprised me.
Directing his office to speed up Bindu’s surgery and treatment, Mammootty suggested that the operation be included in the ‘Hridhyam’ project in collaboration with Rajagiri Hospital in Aluva and his charity movement Care and Share International Foundation. A team of expert doctors led by Dr. Shiv K. Nair, one of India’s well-known cardiac surgeons, completed the surgery successfully. Today, Bindu is perfectly healthy and happily sitting at home in Venjaramood. I thought that when a life costing such a large amount of money is a mercy, it will be in the media tomorrow and the outside world will know. I waited for three months, but nothing happened! I also spoke to the people who are managing Mammootty’s charity about this. Their reply was ‘another surprise to me’. It is only to be helpful to the beneficiaries.’
But I thought you should know this, and that’s why I wrote it. Anyway thank you mr Mammootty. May you continue to serve as a hand for tens of thousands…’
