Mammography and Breast Cancer Risk Factors: Recommendations for Women Under 40

TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – style=”margin-left:0; margin-right:0″>Dr. Dr. Samuel Haryono, SpB (K) Onk, an oncologist from the Indonesian Association of Surgical Oncologists, emphasized that women under the age of 40 are actually recommended to undergo mammography examinations if they have risk factors for breast cancer.

Mammography in the sense of screening. Many are afraid. “We agreed that it is 40 years, younger than Europe. It could be younger, 26 years, we can see the risk factors,” said Samuel in Jakarta, Saturday (21/10/2023).

Mammography is a radiological examination which aims to detect abnormalities that can lead to cancer in the breast. This procedure involves using X-rays or X-ray photos to get an internal image of the breast.

According to Samuel, women can consider undergoing mammography starting at age 25 if they have risk factors for breast cancer, including a family history of this cancer.

Apart from family history, there are several other risk factors for breast cancer, such as smoking or exposure to cigarette smoke (passive smoking), a poor diet that is high in fat and low in fiber, and consuming foods that contain preservatives or dyes.

Other risk factors include having your first menstruation at the age of less than 12 years, menopause after the age of 50 years, giving birth to your first child after the age of 35 years, never breastfeeding a child, and having breast surgery caused by benign or malignant tumor abnormalities.

Samuel also suggested that women carry out regular breast self-examinations or BSE, along with clinical breast examinations or SADANIS, as an effort to detect breast cancer early.

“There is a need to increase awareness of BSE and SADANIS. Apart from that, mammography has also been proven to reduce the death rate from breast cancer,” said Samuel.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, breast cancer ranks first in terms of the highest number of cancer cases in Indonesia and is the main cause of death due to cancer.
