Mammatus Clouds: Formation, Shapes, and Mysteries Explored by Prof. Abdullah Al-Misnad

Prof. Abdullah Al-Misnad, President of the Weather and Climate Society, spoke about mammatus clouds and their forms.

Al-Misnad said, “Mammatus clouds are terrifying, frightening clouds in their shape and description, and they are among the strangest types of clouds that sometimes form in the form of cow’s breasts.”

“There are more than 10 different theories of meteorologists trying to explain its formation,” Al-Misnad added.

Al-Misnad continued, “It usually appears under the great cumulonimbus clouds, and in an atmosphere full of moisture.”

Al-Musnad added that mammatus clouds are generally formed at different heights and in different shapes, and the wind plays a major role in the diversity of its shapes and images, which sometimes causes the viewer to be surprised, or even frightened.

Al-Musnad continued that mammatus clouds are rare clouds in humid regions, so how about in our dry regions, and despite that they were seen in more than one place in Saudi Arabia, such as Makkah Al-Mukarramah, Abha, and Hail.

He explained that mammatus clouds usually appear under the great cumulonimbus clouds, in humid atmospheres, and rainy thunderstorms, as they are colored in different colors, depending on the thickness of the clouds above them, the time of day they appear, and the angle of the sun’s rays falling on them.
