South African Premier League team Mamelodi Sundowns became the champion of the “African League” tournament, organized for the first time this year by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to increase competition in African football.
In the rematch played yesterday at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, the executive capital of South Africa, Mamelodi Sundowns and Morocco’s Vidad team faced each other to become the “first owner of the cup”.
The South African team, which lost 2-1 to its opponent in the match in Morocco, won the match at home 2-0 and became the first team to lift the African League cup.
In his statement after the match, FIFA President Gianni Infantino congratulated the Mamelodi Sundowns team and said that the African League, held for the first time this year, will make significant contributions to world football.
Infantino also congratulated the Vidad team, which was eliminated in the final, and said, “It’s a great game in a great atmosphere. These people are already champions. African football won today. Today is a great day for Africa.”
8 teams from across the continent competed in the first season of the African League. A total of 24 teams from 3 regions across the continent are expected to participate in the tournament starting next year.
The African League tournament is the third major club-level tournament on the continent, after the African Champions League and the African Confederation Cup.
