Malzmühle brewery takes over Sünner in Cologne

The two oldest Kölsch breweries merge. The Malzmühle brewery will take over the Sünner brewery in Cologne-Kalk from January 1, 2022 and relocate its production from Mühlen Kölsch from the Heumarkt to Kalk.

According to a joint press release, the Malzmühle will continue to sell Sünner beers and spirits as well as the lemonade brand Kölsches Wasser. All Sünner employees are also to be taken over. The takeover also includes the Sünner Keller & Biergarten gastronomy.

“We are grateful that we, together with the Zur Malzmühle brewery, have now found a way to preserve both the Sünner brand and its products and the location in Cologne-Kalk in its original form of use and its workplaces,” said Schmitz -DuMont.

The Malzmühle managing directors Melanie Schwartz and Michael Rosenbaum are also positive. “With the brewery and distillery technologies there, supplemented by some technological and capacity-related expansions, we will have optimal opportunities to further develop both Mühlen Kölsch and Sünner products according to our ideas.”

The Malzmühle had been planning to expand its brewing capacity for some time. The first talks between the two companies then took place in mid-2020, as the Sünner brewery was hit hard by the corona-related catering closings. (lm / Malzmühle / Photo: IMAGO / Joko)
