malware targets Apple developers

Malware has been around for a very long time, and Windows is not the only operating system affected. On the Apple ecosystem, these also abound. A new target is the Xcode development software.

The malwares are thought and designed to target certain people, on certain types of machines, in well-defined actions. The creators of this malicious software must cast an ever wider net to trap as many victims as possible. Today a malware targets developers using the Xcode development environment.

Malware targets developers using Xcode

Malware can target users with very different profiles. There are those who are naive enough to click on attachments in suspicious emails, there are those who believe they are downloading the latest hot movie, and so on. It is not surprising to learn of the existence of malware that specifically targets developers.

This takes the form of a project called TabBarInteraction

If a Sentinel One report is to be believed, it appears that malware is currently rampant in the Apple ecosystem. This one targets developers who build apps for iOS and macOS platforms. Indeed, the malware in question takes the form of an Xcode project called TabBarInteraction. Developers who download this project, thinking that they are actually recovering the source code for such a project, find themselves with a backdoor installed on their machine once the project has been executed.

Basically, this malware is a trojan, which means that the hacker is able to spy on the user through their webcam and microphone, to retrieve what they type on their keyboard but also to retrieve and send files from and to the infected machine. This malware would have appeared last October, having therefore had several months to commit its misdeeds.

For now, and as is often the case with malware, Sentinel One recommends that developers be very careful about the Xcode projects they download, let alone those that are shared. Caution is the mother of safety. Your machine and personal data will say thank you.
