Malware is currently spreading on Facebook Messenger. To trap Internet users, hackers share a link or a video via instant messaging. This corrupted link allows hackers to install malicious software without your knowledge on your computer or smartphone. Their objective ? Siphon all personal data stored on your device.
A dangerous malware is circulating on Facebook Messenger, report our colleagues from SudInfo, a Belgian media. After taking control of multiple Facebook accounts, hackers are sharing massively links or videos via instant messaging. Questioned by the media, Commissioner Olivier Bogaert of the Belgian Federal Police, urges Internet users to be cautious.
According to the police officer, these messages and videos relay to dating sites or pornographic sites programmed to install a virus on your terminal. This software will quickly collect all the data on your phone, tablet or computer (photos, videos, notes, documents, etc.). This data is usually sold on dark web black markets in exchange for cryptocurrency.

Do not click on this video shared via Facebook Messenger
“In addition to this retrieval, it will generate messages in your name which will contain the same link as the one you clicked on. In this way, the hackers will also be able to recover the data of some of your friends who, like you, will have reacted to this message ” explains Olivier Bogaert.
Sometimes hackers spread malware by relying on video sharing. These sequences will open a dummy web page that takes the design of the Facebook authentication panel to the letter. This page will ask the user to provide username and password to view the video. “In their messages, hackers will often capitalize on your concern by telling you that you are appearing in the video. Surprised, you will react by clicking on the link. So, you will understand, it is very important never to follow up on this type of content ” details the commissioner.
This is not the first time that crooks have used Messenger to deploy viruses. In the past, Messenger has been used to spread spy viruses on Windows PCs, Linux PCs and Macs. Some hackers also use email to install software intended to mine cryptocurrency on your computer. Caution is therefore in order.
