Hans Tophoven from the Maltesers came up with the idea of a feel-good morning for the homeless in 1999. This includes a breakfast buffet in a cozy atmosphere with all kinds of delicacies and, above all, the approach and the feeling of being welcome. If you want, you can take a shower beforehand and the organizers always try to provide services such as haircuts, foot care, fresh clothes or medical advice. On Saturday (October 28th), the feel-good morning was themed Oktoberfest, in keeping with the season. The decoration was coordinated and visitors could enjoy pretzels, meatloaf and sausages. The Malteser organize the feel-good morning in cooperation with the St. Ursula Gymnasium.
The gate to the Ursuline schoolyard opened promptly at 8:30 a.m. and the approximately 30 volunteers already know many of their guests who arrive early in the morning. By midday there were 200 and one of them was there for the first time. Mayor Stephan Keller paid a visit to the feel-good morning team and the guests there. Coordinator Petra Odenweller explained to the city leader how the feel-good morning actually works. Keller took the opportunity to exchange ideas with various helpers and also took time for the guests. Over a cup of coffee, he learned from Karin and Sandra some of their personal life stories about what the feel-good morning means to them.
Also on site on Saturday was Dr. André Schumacher, who, in addition to a medical examination, also offered the opportunity to be vaccinated against Covid and/or flu.
The idea of feel-good mornings has now been adopted by other cities. Taking a shower on a Saturday morning and then enjoying a nice breakfast seems completely normal for many people, but is something special for the homeless. The next Maltese feel-good morning will take place on November 25, 2023.
