Bodenfelde (kp). Exactly a week ago today, when a chance encounter turned Malte Engelhardt into a little social media celebrity. During one of his regular rubbish collection campaigns on the banks of the Weser in Bodenfelde, the 28-year-old was approached completely unexpectedly by a stroller he had never met before. “The man told me how great it is that I keep the Weserweg clean,” the 28-year-old remembers. Then the stroller asked for a photo and said goodbye again. What happened next turned Malte into a small local celebrity overnight. Because: The stranger wrote a post about the garbage collection campaign on Facebook, which immediately became a viral hit. From then on, Malte was celebrated as an “everyday hero”. Eventually even the local press began to report on him. “I’m so happy about the many positive comments, the likes and that the post has been shared so often on Facebook,” he says.
But it is also important to him not to pay for the fame that occurred overnight. “Almost exactly a year ago, Marvin Nolte and I started cleaning up the footpath and cycle path along the Weser,” he recalls. At that time, the Bodenfelder, both of whom are employed by the Harz-Weser workshops in Dassel, met as usual on a bench on the banks of the Weser. Due to the large amount of waste in this area, they spontaneously decided that evening to ensure cleanliness from now on. “We started at the Wahmbeck grill hut and walked almost seven kilometers along the Weser to collect the rubbish,” says Malte. Since then, they have met at least once a week for a joint rubbish collection campaign.
Because of this, the two had already attracted attention before posting on Facebook. “We get great support from the administration or private organizations,” said the 28-year-old. Some time ago the Bodenfelde initiative sponsored the duo with a handcart in order to be able to transport the rubbish better. In addition, the municipal administration always supplies the two of them with new garbage bags. “It’s great that it all goes down so well,” says Malte. As soon as he and Marvin are out and about on the Weser with their handcart, they are greeted and words of appreciation are given. Recently they have been carrying a small donation box into which strollers can put a little money. “We use the small donations to stock up on provisions for a day like this,” they say. And when the end of the working day is approaching after about four hours of work, you will be rewarded, as always, with an ice cream from your favorite ice cream parlor on the banks of the Weser in Bodenfelden.
