Malta Elected OSCE Chairmanship and Promises Support for Ukraine

Malta will begin a year-long chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on January 1, 2024, after Russia spent months blocking the organization’s functioning and the approval of Estonia’s chairmanship.

This was reported by “European Truth”.

Malta elected OSCE Chairmanship at a ministerial meeting in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, on December 1.

This happened against the backdrop of repeated attempts by the Russian Federation to block another pre-agreed candidacy – Estonia – as an allegedly hostile state due to its active condemnation of full-scale Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Since decisions in the OSCE are made solely by consensus, Moscow’s actions threatened the collapse of the organization, which could be left without a head by 2024. But in the end, with the assistance of North Macedonia, which presided during 2023, the Russian Federation agreed to the Maltese chairmanship.

The OSCE has officially approved a compromise with the Russian Federation, which will prolong the life of the organization

The Minister of Foreign and European Affairs and Trade of Malta, Ian Borg, becomes the ex-officio Chairman of the OSCE. At the OSCE Ministerial Council meeting in Skopje, he stressed that his country’s role in the OSCE is more relevant and important than ever before.

The Maltese also stressed Malta’s commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities and obligations within the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in the future.

Last month, Malta and Finland, which is due to chair the OSCE in 2025, pledged to support Ukrainewhile Russia is at war, and after the war, when the state deepens into the process of reconstruction.
