Malta closes borders for the unvaccinated

So far, Malta has required proof of vaccination or a negative coronavirus test from people traveling from most European countries. According to the government, the epidemic situation has called for stricter rules – the number of active cases in this island nation has increased fivefold in the last ten days.

“We are the first country in Europe to take this step,” the minister said of closing the borders for the unvaccinated. “In recent days, most of the new cases have been related to travel – they were people who came from abroad or Maltese who traveled abroad and returned. Most of them were unvaccinated tourists, “the minister added.

The Maltese authorities announced today that 96 people had been infected in the past day. The Times of Malta wrote that for the fourth day in a row, the number of new cases had doubled from the previous day.

Malta has a population of around 450,000 and the highest proportion of people vaccinated against covid-19 in the EU. 346,000 people have already received both doses of the vaccine, which is 79 percent of the adult population.
