The lion cub has been housed in a zoo, after it was found on the outskirts of the town of Subotica, near the border with Hungary, on Thursday.
Sonja Mandic, the head of Palic zoo, says that the lion cub, a female, was malnourished and weakened. It is now receiving intravenous nutrition and treatment.

– It can be between three and six months old, says Mandic.
A resident saw the lion cub on the road and called the police, who took it to the zoo. It must have been friendly and not afraid of people.
A video shows a police officer and residents petting it. The police have not made any official statement on the matter.
Smuggling of wild and rare animals is widespread in the Balkans.
