Malmö’s Loss to Mjällby: Defending Like a Junior Team Cost Three Points

Updated 21:45 | Published 20:53

HÄLLEVIK/STOCKHOLM. Malmö took the bus to Hällevik.

But it was Mjällby who parked it – and cheated MFF of three points for the second time this summer.

– We defend like a junior team and it cost us three points today, says Pontus Jansson.

Sebastian Jörgensen got free, Taha Ali dribbled and shot, Isaac Kiese Thelin heeled and spliced, Derek Cornelius nodded, Henrik Rydström made offensive changes and Malmö forced.

But it was Herman Johansson in Mjällby who scored the only goal.

Already in the 33rd minute, there was a free kick lift from one of the Allsvenskan’s biggest sensations this year – 37-year-old David Löfquist. Pontus Jansson missed completely when he was going to head away the free kick and Joseph Ceesay, who was supposed to mark Johansson, only looked at his player and not at all at the ball. Then Johansson stuck his head out and nodded the ball in.

– It kind of landed on my head. I didn’t have to do much. A good serve by “Löken”, says Herman Johansson to Sportbladet.

First home win since May

Thus, Mjällby had got the match at Strandvallen, in front of 5,962 spectators (basically packed in the warm late summer evening) where they wanted: grumpy and rowdy with a 1–0 lead to watch, which was also confirmed by Anders Torstensson in a break interview in Discoveryplus:

– We are where we want to be. We cannot be expected to control the match when we face Malmö, said the Mjällby coach.

In the second half, Maif parked the famous bus in front of their goal and what slipped through was taken care of by goalkeeper Noel Törnqvist deservedly, even though MFF did not create a single really high-quality chance after the break.

– We get the match where we want with 1-0 and we are good at being low and defending the box well. We took it all the way and it feels good, says Herman Johansson.

You parked the bus in the second half?

– Definitely. It was probably a style, but we’ll take that.

Fair?

– No, maybe it’s not, given the chances. But damn, that’s football.

“Defends like a junior team”

The result means that Mjällby has now defeated MFF in both teams’ meetings this year and that they move up to sixth place, while Malmö missed the chance to move up to the league lead.

– Sad. We create enough chances to get points and maybe even win. We have talked about how important it is to have fixed situations. But we defend as a junior team and it cost us three points today, says MFF’s Pontus Jansson.

He was disturbed by the sun at Mjällby’s goal.

– I should have had a cap. I didn’t see the ball.

Malmö’s coach Henrik Rydström on Jansson’s junior team comparison:

– Yes, that’s how you can define it. We got a little comfortable. We take shortcuts, says Rydström.

It can also be noted that this was Mjällby’s first home win since May.

– If we play 20 matches like this, Malmö will win 18, says Mjällby’s coach Anders Torstensson.
