Malmö FF Player Runs in Underwear During Training – Club Chairman Criticizes Behavior

It was during the warm-up during Wednesday’s training in Spanish Estepona that Malmö FF’s new young player, who became part of the A-team either this summer or this winter, ran around the pitch wearing only underpants and a GPS vest.

Part of a wedge, MFF explained. But the leadership staff did not know what was going to happen in advance.

In place at the training were a large number of sponsors, who are visiting Spain for a networking meeting, and after a few minutes the young players had to put on their shirts and shorts.

Now the club’s chairman Anders Pålsson criticizes the wedge.

– It’s not about whether it came out or not. It’s about the fact that it’s not something we should keep doing. The old man got pissed and put the coffee down his throat, I can tell. They are employed and have their employment contracts, “Code of conduct”, and know how to behave, says Pålsson to Fotbollskanalen.

– In addition, they are at a workplace, even if they happen to be in Spain. This is not in accordance with our values and they have been informed of this. I have spoken to Daniel (Andersson, sporting director) about this and it will not happen again.

Pålsson also does not want similar things to happen “behind closed doors”.

– So I don’t get involved in what the players do in private. But normal introductions of new players, which I have been a part of, in the dressing room, is possibly that you introduce yourself and say a few words. Maybe at a dinner party or something like that, someone sings a song – and we shouldn’t take that away from them.

– But what happened down there, we shouldn’t continue. It is anachronistic and reminds me of the boarding schools of old. That’s not what we do in Malmö FF.

After Wednesday’s training, coach Henrik Rydström admitted that things could look strange from the outside.

– But we have good older players who are not looking to humiliate. This is where it can go wrong, if there is talk of humiliation or penalism. But that is not the case, said the MFF coach.

Rydström believes that wedging is a good measure to bring the group together.

– It’s all about how you do it and here the players offered themselves, which is important to get into the group. I’ve been with teams where you didn’t have any kind of wedge and then I think it’s harder for the new ones to come in, said Rydström.

– Then there is always a risk that some player may feel that it is not funny. Here, no one did. What has been here has been very innocent, but it is also because I know how I myself got wedged in. It was brutal. That is no longer the case.
