He won six SM golds and took home the golden ball twice.
Now one of Malmö FF’s greatest icons of all time is dead.
Bosse Larsson was 79 years old.
– He is the best Swedish footballer I have played with, says Ralf Edström.
“For many, Bosse Larsson was the greatest MFF player of all time”.
This is how Malmö FF begins his memorial text about the footballer who during his career was a defender, midfielder and striker. His credentials are nothing short of sensational: six SC golds, four cup golds, three World Cup finals and two golden balls. He received the gold medal as part of the MFF team that reached the final of the European Cup (now the Champions League) in 1979 and was later elected to Swedish football’s hall of fame.
Fans can leave flowers
Bosse broke through in MFF in the mid-50s, was a foreign professional in VfB Stuttgart between 1966 and 1969, but then got homesick and moved back to Malmö. When he rounded off his MFF time a decade later, he had scored 289 goals in 546 games.
He also made 70 international appearances for Sweden and was a key player in the 70s.
– He is the best Swedish footballer I have played with. It was always said in the past that you could have played with ten Nisse Lidholm. I don’t think that would have worked, but ten Bosse Larsson would have worked. He could play anywhere. The first game in WC 74 he played at centre-back, then he moved up to midfield again. He was a huge footballer, says Ralf Edström.
What is your best memory with him?
– What we did together with the WC 74 team. When he scored the important penalty against Austria.
Pontus Jansson pays tribute to Larsson at X.
“I never got to see you play. I never got to meet you. Still, I only understood since I was little that you were the greatest. As my father always described it to me, “his name is not Bosse, his name is God” Next year we will win gold for you! Rest in peace Boss,” he writes.
Malmö FF has set up a memorial site at entrance seven at Eleda Stadium, where supporters can leave flowers and express their condolences.
“Rest in peace, Bosse” writes Emil Forsberg on X.

Am too young to have seen Bosse Larsso play, but since everyone was talking about how good he was, I have tried to see him in matches afterwards. And can only agree with everyone how incredibly good he was. People probably don’t understand how good he was. MFF was in the Champions league final with him as a key player. Should have played in a big club and had dominated like Modric in Real Madrid etc. Absolutely sick complete. He was good at everything and is the most complete footballer Sweden has had.
