With a history in Malmö FF and ongoing friendships with Pontus Jansson and Johan Dahlin, Magnus Eriksson has an added perspective on the cup final opponent. The Djurgården team captain continues to find it difficult to find weaknesses in the Allsvenskan league leaders.
– Immediately, they have nothing like that to point out tactically. They are extremely skilled, says Eriksson.
Then he says:
– Sometimes they can be very self-righteous in their upbringing. If you lay down and press with that intensity, you can spin several balls.
Pontus Jansson does not agree that he is complacent.
– I think we are careful in everything we do. We are firm. It is clear that we are playing with high risk, but it is also rewarding. We know what we are doing. If you look at the other Allsvenskan teams, there are goals per game and minutes where the goalkeepers and defenders give up goals. We haven’t done that yet. We have good legs at the back, maybe not me but the other three at least, says the MFF captain.
Henrik Rydström says MFF has certainly dropped a few walls in its building game, but it’s a price you have to be willing to pay.
– We have a way of playing where we want to control the game. Part of that is not removing the ball by simply pulling it away. It often feels better to some supporters and some commentators, that you pull it and then it’s not dangerous in that situation, but then it’s dangerous in the next situation instead that, says the MFF coach.
According to him, Djurgården likes to try to press high and hard.
– If they press well and we are bad, we will have problems, but if we solve it, we have opportunities. It’s something we work with every day and there’s always a strategy behind it. Self righteous? Don’t know. I think we are humble but confident, says Rydström.
If Djurgården should not fail to steal a ball high up the field, they can focus on an unfocused Johan Dahlin. Eriksson has had plenty of opportunities to use that.
– When I played with Johan, it was very easy to get off balance. But he has also grown older. There is always a slight relationship between outfielders and goalkeepers during shooting practice. Then you shout something. “Stretch out”, for example. Johan went mad when people kept going at him. You could get planning.
According to Pontus Jansson, it would mostly affect Djurgården themselves if they upset Dahlin.
– It is both a risk and a reward. I don’t think you want it on balance in your face. He is 37 years old now and full of practice so I think he knows what he is doing. My advice to Mange and them is not to balance it, says Jansson.
