Thiruvananthapuram > State government has appointed world-renowned and award-winning dancer Padma Bhushan Mallika Sarabhai as Chancellor of Kalamandalam Kalpitha University. Mallika Sararabhai, who brought Indian Sasatriya dance to world fame, is well known in theatre, film and television as well as a writer, editor and director.
Daughter of famous dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai and astronaut Vikram Sarabhai, Mallika is a world famous dancer in Kuchupudi and Bharatanatyam. Mallika’s mother Mrinalini belongs to the northern Palakkad Anakkara clan. Mallika was born in Gujarat in 1953. She Educated at St. Xavier’s College, Ahmedabad. She holds an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad and a PhD from the University of Gujarat.
She is the author of many authoritative books on Indian theatre, has won numerous awards including the Dance Soloist Award of the Theater de Champs Elysee in Paris, the Chevalier de Palms Academic Award of the French Government, the Pasta Theater Award and was shortlisted for the Nobel Prize in 2005. Culture Minister VN Vasavan said in a press conference that Mallika’s appointment reflects the government’s view that eminent, gifted and talented people should come to head universities and it will be very beneficial for Kerala arts .
