Mall of America forced into lockdown after reports of active shooter (VIDEO)

A Minnesota mall was briefly quarantined after gunshots rang out inside on New Years Eve

Two people were injured in a shootout at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. Buyers were ordered to take refuge inside, as several police descended into the building.

The incident took place around 4:30 p.m. Friday local time, as the mall was full of visitors looking for freebies hours before the state ushered in 2022.

Footage from the scene shows officers running towards the entrance, as buyers flee the scene. Although most of the evacuees appear relatively calm, several people can be heard screaming in the background.

Another clip shows paramedics tending to an apparent shooting victim as several onlookers watch.

Police said two people sustained non-life threatening injuries during the incident. One of the male victims was shot in the leg and the other was a passerby who was grazed by the bullet, police later said. The shooting was preceded by an argument between the first male victim and the shooter on the third floor.

As the situation evolved, shoppers had to congregate in crowded stores.

“Active shooter. Third floor. Sure for now. What a crazy story for New Years Eve. Can’t wait for a drink later tonight, ” a witness tweeted.

The lockdown was lifted less than an hour after the incident was reported, as police said they were no longer looking for a suspect inside the mall. It is not known if anyone was arrested as a result of the shooting.
