Mali joined Morocco and Egypt in the men’s football competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics, by finishing the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations in third place, by defeating Guinea 4-3 on penalties after the original time ended in a goalless draw on Friday in the city of Tangiers.
The penalty shootout smiled at Mali in the third-place match, after it was the reason for its exclusion from the semi-finals when it lost to host Morocco by the same result, after the end of the original and extra time in a 2-2 draw.
Those with the first three positions in the continental championship qualify directly for the Olympic Games, while the fourth-place finisher will play a playoff match with the fourth Asian, since the share of each of the two continents is three and a half seats.
The final match will be held on Saturday in the capital, Rabat, between Morocco and defending champion Egypt, which overcame Guinea 1-0 in the round of four.
