Malfunction at Stevin Lock Causes Closure of Afsluitdijk in North Holland

The Afsluitdijk is closed in both directions due to a malfunction at the Stevin lock. This is on the North Holland side of the dike. It is still unclear how long the outage will last.

The malfunction at the Stevin locks in Den Oever in North Holland was reported around 4.10 p.m. on Thursday.

Due to the malfunction, traffic from North Holland cannot go up the dike and traffic from Friesland cannot leave the dike. As a result, there is about 9 kilometers of traffic jams on the A7 in both directions. The delay can be up to an hour.

Motorists between North Holland and Friesland are advised to drive via the A6 through Flevoland. This will add extra travel time.

It is still unclear how long the technical failure will last. According to Rijkswaterstaat, a technician is now present.
