Like every year, the Malemort festival committee is offering a preview of the carnival floats this Saturday. He opens the doors of his chestnut room this afternoon from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.. Since 1934, the Malemort carnival has attracted thousands of people, particularly on Wednesdays when it wanders through the streets of Brive. It is the largest in Limousin and one of the largest in the South-West. Long-term work each year lasting nearly 6 months to make the floats with the effigies of cartoon or comic book characters. This year we will be able to see Chip and Dale, Spiderman, Tintin. Each one has between 10 and 14,000 crepe paper flowers!
15 days to place the flowers on a float
It is therefore necessary to make nearly 130,000 flowers. Which must then be placed and glued one by one on the metal frame of the tanks. “We spend around 15 days on each tank to install them together” points out Jacques, one of the 187 volunteers of the Malemort festival committee which organizes the carnival. But the result, as always, lives up to everyone’s expectations. “We have colors that are dapper as they said. It lights up. The kids see these things lit up, they are happy. It’s the satisfaction of having built something beautiful.”

Many lives
Works of art, let’s not be afraid of words! Such beautiful floats, that after their parade in Malemort, they are bought by other carnivals in Lot, Cantal and Aveyron. “They have a second, even a third life. There are tanks which are still running three or four years later” underlines Gaston. This makes the volunteers proud, he adds. Some people from the committee are going to go to these demonstrations to see their float again.”
