Male Tourist Attacked by Crocodile While Snorkeling in ‘Crocodile Country’ in Far North Queensland, Australia

Jakarta

Male tourist attacked by crocodile while snorkeling in far north Queensland, Australia. He didn’t know that he had entered an area called ‘the country of crocodiles’.

The 50-year-old man was reportedly attacked by a crocodile in waters about 28 kilometers from Haggerstone Island. The incident occurred on Saturday (27/5/2023) at around 14.00 local time.

After the attack, the man was reportedly seriously injured including cuts and bruises on his face. His hands also became victims of this scary incident.

As reported by Channel 9 News quoted news.com.au, Sunday (4/562023), the man was a tourist traveling with his entourage. When he was attacked, fortunately his group mates were able to help him get back to the boat.

The victim was then immediately taken to the mainland to be rushed to Thursday Island Hospital. Luckily his condition was quite stable at that time.

The local Department of Environment and Science confirmed that they had received reports of the crocodile attack.

“Wildlife officers have started an investigation and will work with the people involved to get more information,” the department said.

“Crocodiles in the open ocean are difficult to find because these animals often travel tens of kilometers per day,” he said.

“It is important that alligator sightings and alligator incidents are reported in a timely manner,” he advised.

According to the statement from the department, Haggerstone Island where the man was snorkeling turned out to be known as ‘crocodile country’. Visitors who come are advised to be vigilant while in the area.

You do this by still assuming crocodiles are in all areas of water, even though there are no warning signs to be vigilant. In addition, they also advise tourists not to leave food near crocodile areas. The department also advises visitors wishing to fish and camp to retreat at least 50 meters from the water’s edge.

It was the third such attack in North Queensland over the past eight weeks. Previously, a fisherman and a dog were killed by a crocodile attack there.
